The town of Pahrump is an unincorporated town and the population center of Nye County, located at the southernmost tip of the county.
Pahrump is approximately 60 miles west of Las Vegas. As one of the fastest growing communities in the west, the new urban features of Pahrump are clearly visible including four casinos, first class amenity RV spaces, wine tasting rooms at two local wineries and a luxury high performance driving race track.
Pahrump is home to 50% of the wineries located in Nevada with the Sanders Family Winery and the Pahrump Valley Winery. Front Sight Firearms Training Institute, one of the world’s leading firearms and training institutes, is also located in Pahrump.
The Southern Paiute Indians, who were the first to occupy the area centuries ago, originally named Pahrump “Pah-Rimpi” or “Water Rock” due to the abundant artesian wells throughout the valley.
Beginning in the late 19th century, American settlers populated Pahrump in the form of large ranch-style settlements, where ranchers grew cotton, alfalfa, and livestock.
Interest in Pahrump increased during the 1960s, with the beginning of large-scale land developments and the introduction of telephone lines and a paved road into the Valley from Las Vegas.
As of March 31, 2014, the Nye County Planning Department has estimated the population in Pahrump to be 38,591.
